LONDON—The Philippines participates for the first time in Frieze London, one of the world’s largest contemporary art fairs, from 04 to 06 October 2019. Frieze London attracts more than 60,000 visitors annually, who are mostly curators, gallerists, collectors, and art critics.
Silverlens, a Makati-based art gallery, will participate in the Themed Section of Frieze London 2019 with a solo exhibition of Pacita Abad’s Immigrant Experience series. The exhibition will be Abad’s first posthumous show.
“Silverlens’ participation in Frieze London through a solo exhibition of Pacita Abad’s works could not have been timelier,” said Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo. “London’s diverse immigrant communities, especially the Filipino community, contribute greatly in enriching the city’s culture. Throughout her lifetime, Abad’s works have resonated among the world’s immigrant communities.”
Abad’s upcoming exhibition is an attempt to revisit the artist’s extensive work in textile, particularly her trapunto paintings. Trapunto a type of quilting technique that gives the canvas and multidimensional effect.
“In Abad’s textiles, the immigrant’s experience is kaleidoscopic and complex,” said art critic Carlos Quijon. “Her way with fabric evokes the simultaneous overwhelming strangeness of new places and their dizzying splendor…In Abad’s works, the immigrant is both exemplary and commonplace.”
Abad’s works continue to create a buzz in London’s artistic circles following a recent acquisition of three of the artist’s works by Tate Modern, London’s foremost contemporary art gallery. END
