The Philippine Embassy in London held a seminar entitled, “END VAWC: Legal and Law Enforcement Perspectives,” in support of the “18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women” celebrated annually in the Philippines from 25 November to 12 December.

The seminar, held at the Sentro Rizal London, focused on UK laws regarding violence against women, as well as practical tips on keeping safe in the city.

Metropolitan Police members of Filipino descent led the discussion on situational awareness and safety tips, and provided information on the most common crimes affecting women and girls in the UK. Solicitor Crystal Dias provided information on the relevant statutes that protect women and girls from domestic abuse and other forms of violence. The seminar allowed for a free exchange of ideas and participants engaged in the lively discussion.

During his opening speech, Ambassador Locsin reiterated the Embassy’s continued efforts in combatting Violence Against Women (VAW), and highlighted the three-part lecture series that began in March this year. He expressed his desire to continue engagements with local legal practitioners, law enforcement officials, and the Filipino community to strengthen the Philippines’ fight against VAW.

The event was attended by some forty members of the Filipino community and the Embassy officers and staff.
