LONDON 12 August 2024 – The Philippine Embassy in London organized a talk and a masterclass/workshop on Philippine folk dances dubbed “Saliw at Salita: Pagdiriwang ng Sayaw at Wika” at Sentro Rizal London on 06 August 2024, in celebration of Buwan ng Wika.
The program, in partnership with the Lahing Kayumanggi Dance Company (LKDC) and Philippine Baranggay Folk Dance Troupe (PBDT), included a discussion on the history and significance of Philippine folk dances facilitated by Mr. Ronnie Del Barrio, founder of LKDC and Creative Director of PBDT, followed by a workshop and a recital by the participants.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. likened Philippine folk dances to a beautiful language that transcends words and speaks to the Filipino people’s history, stories, and hearts. Ambassador Locsin added that just like learning Tagalog or any of our other Filipino languages, dance is something that can bring people closer together and help express Filipinos’ unique identity.
A highlight of the event was a recital by the participants wherein they showcased the dance moves and steps they learned during the workshop. Their performance of the folk dances Sua-sua, Makatud, Kadal Tahu and Itik-itik earned praise from the audience composed of selected leaders and members of the Filipino community.
Workshop participants were second- and third-generation Filipino-British youth who are keen to connect with their Filipino heritage.
The event concluded with a salo-salo of Filipino merienda fare and fellowship with the guests.
